St. John's Bible logoIn 1999, St. John's University in Minnesota and the Benedictine monks of Saint John’s Abbey commissioned a handwritten, illuminated Bible for the new millennium and asked one of the world’s foremost calligraphers, Donald Jackson, scribe to Queen Elizabeth, to take on the project. At Jackson’s workshop in Wales, calligraphers are regularly employed as assistants, continuing the highest traditions of this ancient art in a modern context. The Bible is monumental--two feet tall and three feet wide and more than 1,000 vellum pages bound in seven volumes. Though each letter is rendered by hand, the calligraphers use computer technology to create and manage page layouts. Info and images

"Book as Art: 20 Years of Artists' Books"
Oct. 27, 2006 to Feb. 4, 2007 (admission $8)
1250 New York Avenue, N.W. Washington, DC 202-783-5000

The Book as Art: Twenty Years of Artists' Books from the National Museum of Women in the Arts explores the sometimes controversial art form that is artists' books. Defined as art objects in the form of books, artists' books combine content and form to create something that is more than a simple container for information. To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), The Book as Art will feature 108 artists' books, by 86 artists, from 12 countries, culled from the museum's collection of more than 800 volumes.
